What is the Kats with Hats brand?

Kats with Hats is a line of handcrafted hats made by James Robinson (a.k.a. J LeMans), in Dallas, Texas. I design gossip worthy fedora hats for those who want to boldly express their individuality & creativity through fashion. Stylizing hats is an outlet from my love of fashion and looking distinguished when I am out in public. The mission of Kats with Hats is to design remarkable and rememberable hats that activate joy and high self-esteem within all who wear our luxurious brand. 

What are you passionate about?

Other than being creative, I have a passion about helping others, especially those who struggle with mental health issues. I have family members and loved ones who have family members who struggle with mental health. It’s sad to see the state of those who have mental health problems and lack support. My way of helping is by having a portion of Kats with Hats proceeds go to financially support those whom God lays on my hearts to help. Sometimes, running a business can be overwhelming. However, knowing that my financial contributions to the mental health community can make a difference give me energy to keep grinding. It’s very rewarding to be able to meet the needs of those who can’t help themselves.

How did you start making hats?

I sorta fell into this craft. Like most men, I would wear hats that would match my outfit. One day on the social media platform, Instagram, I saw some unique custom designed fedoras that made me say wow! I had not seen any type of these stylish hats in stores before. I wondered how could I have or create something similar. I have been a creative person for decades. I have a four year degree in graphic communications. People have always complemented me on my style of dress. In my 50’s, I bought my first sewing machine. Prior to the purchase, I had never sewn before using a sewing machine. I was up to the challenge.

Who or what is your biggest inspiration?

There are a few people who inspire me by the way they dress. Those people are Anthony Hamilton, D. L. Hughley and Erykah Badu. They all wear hats that range from contemporary, distinguished and exotic.

Why the name Kats with Hats?

Not once had I thought of creating or stylizing my own hats or anyone else’s hat at time I came up with the name. The name “Kats with Hats” was a name I came up with for a podcast; years before I came up with the brand. The theme of the podcast was to have men in the podcast always wear all kinds of hats during the show. The word “Kats” was popularly used as a slang for “dudes” a long time ago. I felt Kat’s with Hats sounded cool and retro at the same time.
